Register and Argus, 26 Aug. 1915.
Lola Adelaide Belden was born July 12th, 1896, near West Union, Iowa, and died at her home near Volga City, Iowa, August 17, 1915, aged 19 years, one month and five days.
In her infancy she was more or less sickly, but after that she grew into a strong and robust girl and enjoyed life until the past two years when her health began to fail. About six weeks ago she visited her aunt and cousins for a couple of weeks at Delaware and Manchester. Here it seems she overtaxed her strength and returned to her home sick, and gradually, in spite of the doctor's care and treatment, grew worse, until Tuesday morning about 10:30 her redeemed spirit left its tenement of clay for that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
Lola was truly a good and religious girl. She was led by her Sunday School to the alter of prayer three years ago last May where she made full surrender of herself to Christ, was baptized and with her parents united with the M.E. church of this place under the labors of Rev. S. B. Bear. She has been faithful to her Christian vows ever since and was a student of the Bible and loved the books and was a reader of the best literature. She loved music and the songs sung at the funeral service were some of her favorites. She was devoted to her Sunday School and church, always ready to meet her share of the responsibilities and work. In her sickness she was patient, kind and resigned to God's will. She had a loving and appreciative spirit in her soul life and was always so thankful for every little kindness done for her. But she has passed down the valley of death and into the glorious life beyond and has entered into that rest that remaineth to the people of God.
She leaves to mourn their loss a father, mother, three brothers, two sisters, a grandfather and grandmother and a number of other relatives and friends. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church conducted by her pastor. Her Sunday School class of young ladies, with their teacher, dressed in white and carrying bouquets of choice flowers, met the funeral procession at the steps of the church and opening in rank, the pall bearers, young men of the Sunday School, marched through and the Sunday School class closing in the procession, followed the coffin into the church and also after the services from the church to the depot. It was a touching and beautiful scene that will linger long in our memories.
Lola's mortal remains were taken to West Union and laid away to rest in that lovely spot waiting for the resurrection morn.
"Asleep in Jesus! blessed sleep,
From which none ever wakes to weep."The floral gifts were many and beautiful.
