Mrs. Mary Dewey, an aged resident of this city, passed away at her home on Elkader Street, Thursday, March 4th, after only a few days illness with lagrippe. Mary E. Benson was born in Westfield, Chautauqua county, N.Y., Oct. 12, 1830. On Oct. 10th, 1850, she was united in marriage with Talcott P. Dewey. They remained in New York until 1854, when they came west to Iowa and settled on a farm in Richland township in Delaware county. They resided on the farm until Mr. Dewey's death, which occurred about forty years ago. Mrs. Dewey then came to Strawberry Point, where she has lived ever since, with the exception of one year in Oklahoma. Mr. and Mrs. Dewey were the parents of ten children. Three of whom died in infancy and a son, Vernon, died at the age of twelve years, and a daughter, Viola, died at the age of nine. The children who survive their mother are Mrs. Jas. Fay, of Long Beach, Cal., Mrs. J. A. Stringer, of Edmundton, Alberta, Canada, Mrs. Loreta Hesner, Mrs. C. D. Wolcott and one son, Jay G., all of Strawberry Point. Mrs. Dewey joined the Methodist church in 1879 and was one of its oldest members here. The funeral was held from her home on Elkader Street Saturday afternoon, Rev. C. J. Rose officiating. Interment was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery.
