Register and Argus, 04 Feb. 1915.
Miss Mildred Sweeney lost her life in a fire which broke out sometime last Thursday night in the Ben Meyer farmhouse in Cox Creek township near Littleport. The house burned to the ground very quickly and gave little time to escape.
It seems Mr. Meyer and family were on the first floor, while Miss Sweeney, who was teaching school near there, had a room upstairs. A stove, from which it is presumed the fire started, was in a room adjoining the one occupied by Mr. Meyer and the pipe ran up through the room occupied by Miss Sweeney. During the night Miss Sweeney discovered the fire and gave the alarm, which allowed Mr. Meyer to save his family and himself but Miss Sweeney, either overcome by smoke or heat, was unable to save herself.
The remains of Miss Sweeney were taken to McGregor on Saturday morning and funeral services were held on Sunday.
The young lady was well and favorably known by many of our young people and she will be missed by her pupils as well as by her family.
