Elkader Register, 10 Sept. 1885.

The people of Littleport and vicinity were called to mourn the death of James Curtis, which occurred at his home in Lodomillo township, on Monday, Aug. 24th, 1885. Mr. Curtis had been in usual good health until about seven weeks before his death, which time he was seized by the typhoid fever which baffled the power of medical skill or loving hands to relieve.

He was born in county Tipperary, Ireland, in the year 1822, which would make him at the time of his death 63 years old. He lived in his native country until he was 28 years old, at which time he resolved to spend the remainder of his life in a country where the chains of tyranny were unknown and, naturally, like many of his down-trodden countrymen, he turned his eyes toward the United States, which stands with open arms ready to receive the oppressed of other countries. He landed in New York in the year 1850; after remaining there a short period he moved westward to Lancaster County, Ohio, here he remained till the year 1865, which time he emmigrated still further westward; coming to this county he purchased a small farm and settled in Elk township, here he remained for several years and by industry and hard labor he had acquired considerable wealth. In 1880 he purchased the Widow McCarthy farm in Lodomillo township, where he resided at the time of his death.

He was twice married, first to a lady in Ohio, by whom he had one son, who now lives in Washington Territory.

His first wife dying in 1855, he was again married in 1858 to Miss Julia Holloran who survives him, and by whom he had four children, two sons and two daughters. He has generously provided his children with a good education. His eldest daughter is a Sister in St. Joseph Convent, Dubuque County.

The funeral which occurred on the 26th, and which was one of the largest seen in this vicinity for years, was held at the Catholic church in Littleport, where high mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Tearney, of Ossian, for the repose of the soul of the deceased. After the funeral sermon which was delivered by Father Tearney, the remains were taken from the church and to the Catholic cemetery, where they were laid to rest, to which he had so generously contributed for its purchase and adornment.

Besides his wife and family, he has left one sister, Mrs. Cornelius Lucy, and a large number of relatives to mourn his loss who have the sympathy of the entire community in their affliction.
