Elkader Register, 06 May 1885.
On Tuesday morning occurred the death of James Dunnigan, an old resident of Elkader. On Monday he had been at work around the garden of M. P. Dunn, with whom he was living, and after eating supper, he went out and lighted a bonfire of the straw and grass he had raked up. He sat down near the fire and watched it, until it died out, and soon after Mr. Hagensick, who resides in the same house, noticed that he was laying down, and thinking he had gone to sleep, he sent his boy to awaken him. Soon the boy returned and said he could not wake him up, and that he was snoring very loud. Mr. Hagensick then went over, and found that he was unconscious, and summoning aid, - Mr. Dunn being absent, - carried him into the house. Dr. Cain was called, but medical skill could do nothing for him, and he passed away at seven o'clock on Tuesday morning, without having regained consciousness. Heart disease and general debility was the cause of his death.
Deceased was born in county West Maid, Ireland, in 1833, and was therefore 52 years of age. He came to this country about 20 years ago, and has resided in this county most of the time since. He was never married, but leaves a sister, Mrs. P. Nugent, and a niece, Mrs. M. P. Dunn, to mourn his loss.
The funeral takes place today, at nine o'clock, and his remains will be laid away to their final rest in the Catholic cemetery at Garnavillo. May he rest in peace!
