Elkader Register, 02 May 1884.
One of the saddest tasks of an editor is to chronicle the death of a friend, and it is with a feeling of reluctance and regret that we communicate the fact that Julus J. Hagen is no more, having died in Chicago, on Wednesday last.
Julius was the son of Mr. John Hagen, of Cox Creek twp., and was about 27 years of age, having been born at Communia, in 1857. Some six months ago he was attacked with a disease of the bone of one of his legs which troubled him to such an extent that amputation became necessary. This operation was performed some three weeks ago, and it was said he would shortly come home. Last week it was apparent that the disease had become so seated that it permeated his entire system, and blood poisoning set in, which resulted in death. The tidings came to his friends to this effect yesterday morning.
His father on Sunday last buried his wife, the friend and companion of years, and now he is called upon to part with a son, the one upon whom he had looked to steady his steps in the declining path of old age. To him we can only extend the sympathy and consolation of friends.
The funeral will take place this (Friday) afternoon, under the auspices of Bismark lodge A.O.U.W., of Elkader, of which Julius was a member. As we write, the arrangements have not been completed, but it is known that the workmen will meet the procession and march to the east side cemetery where the burial services will take place. Brethern of the order are especially invited to join in paying the last sad rites to a departed brother.
