Elkader Register, Thur., 25 Nov. 1880. Osterdock column.
On Wednesday morning, of last week, Lawrence Hansel, of Mallory township, two miles south of Osterdock, was found dead, in bed. He was a single man about 48 years of age, and the owner of a good property. He has for some time been living alone, in a temporary shanty on his farm, the residence proper being occupied by J. F. Riegel. On Wednesday morning Riegel went out as usual to feed his hog, and not seeing Lawrence about, went to the door and tried to rouse him, but hearing no response, he opened the door, which was fastened by a string, and went in, and found the occupant a corpse, as above stated. J. H. Hill, Esq., was immediately called, who decided to hold an inquest, and a jury was summoned consisting of J. H. Bowman, A. J. B__dley and Francis Palmer. Several witnesses were examined, but aside from what was already stated no material testimony was elicited except that for several weeks past the deceased had been in a continuous state of intoxication. The jury found "that deceased came to his death by the habitual and excessive use of intoxicating liquor."
