Elmer Marting, Sr.

Funeral services for Elmer F. Marting, Sr., were held Friday, August 21, 1992 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Charles W. Miller officiated, assisted by the Rev. O. Paul Hougen. The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Joann Martins was the organist and Kim Schutte was the soloist. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. Casket bearers were grandsons David Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, Daniel Lawrence, Stacey Corbin, Kevin Corbin, Rick Marting, Larry Marting, Greg Marting, Corey Marting, Todd Marting, and Tim Marting.

Elmer Fritz Marting, son of Henry Gerhard and Anna (Meier) Marting, was born September 8, 1908 in Monona Township, Clayton County, near Luana, Iowa. He passed away Tuesday, August 18, 1992 in Lutheran Hospital at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He had reached the age of 83 years, 11 months and 10 days.

He was baptized in St. John Lutheran Church at Luana, on October 17, 1908 by the Rev. W. Paulson and confirmed there on April 19, 1922 by the Rev. H. P. Kumpf. Elmer attended the Heinsville School, District No. 4.

On August 31, 1935 he was married to Helen Dorothy Schmitt at the St. John Lutheran Church Parsonage in Luana. To this union five children were born. They farmed in the Luana area until 1960 when they moved to their present home in Postville.

Elmer became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville on November 29, 1953. He was also a member of the National Woodcarvers Association at Waterloo, IA. Elmer was a talented woodcarver and displayed his work at national regional and local shows. Most of his carvings have been placed in the Historical Museum in Monona and may be seen there.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Milton, Vernie, Orlando and Alvin; and a sister, Mrs. Alvin (Adaila) Vogt.

Surviving are his wife, Helen, of Postville; 3 sons, Elmer L. Marting and his wife, Carol, of Monona, IA, Robert Marting and his wife, Teh-Ling, of San Leandro, CA, and Richard Marting & his wife, Anne, of Palatine, IL; 2 daughters, Elsie Lynne and her husband, Bruce Lawrence, of Sauk City, WI and Barbara Jane and her husband, Stanley Corbin, of Wadena, IA; 16 grandchildren, Lorelei Carol Marting Huelskamp, Lynnette Janine Marting Olson, Leanne Dorothy Marting O'Brien, Larry Elmer Marting, Gregory Jay Marting, Corey Scott Marting, Timothy Shawn Marting, Richard Anthony Marting, Theresa Marie Martin, Todd Christian Marting, David Alan Lawrence, Matthew Richard Lawrence, Daniel Robert Lawrence, Stacey Lee Corbin, Brenda Jane Corbin, Kevin Lyle Corbin; 4 great grandchildren, Brandi Shannon Marting, Alexandra Carol Huelskamp, Ian Cole Marting, and Eryn Lorene O'Brien and a brother, Harvey Marting and his wife, Erma, of Monona.
