Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Dec. 1898. Garnavillo column.

Mrs. Aleida Hermina Meier was born in Nordhorn, Hanover, Germany, Sept. 28, 1833. She came to America in 1842 and located with her parents in Piqua, Ohio. Here she was married to Mr. Claus Meier in 1852. Mr. Meier preceded her in death three years. During the forty-three years of wedded life this couple built up a prosperous and happy home, eight children coming to bless their fireside, five boys and three girls. One child, Herman is dead, John, Henry and Mathilda reside in Sac County, Iowa, Peter at Parker, South Dakota, Amelia at McGregor; Mary, wife of Mr. Helmuth Meyer, in Farmersburg township, and Bernhard at the old home with whom Mrs. Meier passed the last few years of her life.

Mrs. Meier was stricken with paralysis on Oct. 27, and never recovered the shock. She lingered until Dec. 15, last Friday, and then passed away from this life of pain. One by one the sweet familiar faces drop away, some with wrinkled cheeks and frosted hair, others on which the bloom of youth is just appearing, and we who remain behind feel a sense of loneliness and loss which can never wholly disappear. Mrs. Meier's was a life of usefulness and was therefore well spent. Her aged mother who resides in Garnavillo, and who sees the children of her children's children playing about her, is left alone, having been preceded in death by her husband and all her children. She is still hearty, though 87 years old.

Mrs. Meier was buried in the new cemetery at this place on Tuesday, Rev. F. Sommerlad, of St. Paul's, officiating. We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing family, and can but point them to the source of all comfort and help.
