DIED - Mr. S.M. Opperman enlisted for the war with Spain June 27, 1898, starting the next day for the south, and died at Jacksonville, Florida, Wednesday evening, oct. 26, at 6:30 o'clock.
On August 1st he was taken with the measles and remained in the hospital fourteen days. He soon recovered from the measles and on September 1 he was taken with appendiceter, or what was really a grape seed lodged in one of the intestines and the next day underwent a successful operation for its removal.
On September 7 the poor fellow was smitten with typhoid fever and had mastered this malady and had so far recovered that he was intending to start for home when the place where the operation was made bursted open resulting in his death. A brother was with him most of the time during his illness.
He was born at St. Seabald, June 13, 1877, and was in the employ of Mr. Charley Roe for a number of years and also at the St. Cloud in this city for a short time. He was liked by all who knew him.
The funeral was held at Strawberry Point Monday conducted by Lutheran ministers. Peace be to his ashes.
