Elkader Register, Thur., 06 Oct. 1898. Elkport column.

DIED - Thursday Sept. 29, 1898, Alexader Meyer, aged 46 years. Mr. Meyer has for the past five years been a sufferer with a complaint of the stomach, which has caused his death. Mr. Meyer was born and raised in Clayton County. He was a man of honor and integrity, a friend of the poor and withal a man that was greatly beloved by his fellowman. For a number of years he was a trustee of Volga twp., which office he filled to the satisfaction of our people. His death has cast a gloom over our community and the bereaved family have the sympathy of all in their sad affliction. The funeral took place Saturday and was largely attended. May he rest in peace.

Note: He has a gravestone in St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery, Garnavillo ..... the stone is engraved with a DOD 09/29/1899, which is in conflict with his obituary printed a year earlier.
