Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Aug. 1898.
In St. Louis at the home of her daughter, Mrs. V. Barnes, last Tuesday evening occurred the death of her mother, Mrs. Harriet Chesley. When the telegram came bearing the news that Mrs. Chesley was dead we can truthfully state that this place was in deep mourning for the departed, as most all of her life was spent here. Harriet E. Bigelow was married to L. Chesley March 6th, 1827. To this union were born five children, four of whom are living, Mrs. Lenore Barnes, of St. Louis; Mrs. Eva Wheeler, of Norton, Kansas; Mrs. Dora Martin, of this place, and A. L. Chesley, of Spencer, all of whom were in attendance at her funeral. Her husband died Oct. 5th, 1894. Mrs. Chesley was an industrious, kind-hearted woman, a benefactor to all around. She with her husband came west to Clayton County in 1861 and settled at Strawberry Point making this place their home. She was a member of the Eastern Star. She looked on the bright side of life, ever had words of encouragement and cheer for those in deep trouble and was ever inquiring after the wellfare of those about her. The remains were brought here Thursday morning for burial and tender hands bore her to her last resting place in our cemetery. Thus one by one earth's loved ones pass away. Funeral services were conducted at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dora Martin by Rev. Hestwood. The children have many friends to sympathize with them in their loss.
"And friends, dear friends, when it shall be
That this low breath is gone from me,
Around my bier ye come to weep,
Let one most loving of you all
Say - Not a tear must o'er her fall,
He giveth His beloved sleep."
