Elkader Register, Thur., 28 July 1898.

H. C. Backhaus who has been suffering from sickness for nearly a year, died on Saturday evening last. He was buried in the cemetery at Ceres on Tuesday, Rev. T. Sommerlad officiating.

Died at his home Saturday evening at 7:30 Mr. Henry Backhaus Sr. at the age of 65. He has, for some time being a sufferer of Consumption. He leaves a wife and six children John, Henry, Kate, Annie, Mrs. Mary Putzier, and Maggie Mueller, to mourn his loss. His remains will be laid to rest at the cemetery at this place Tuesday. Rev. 0. Gammelin will conduct the funeral service.
