Elkader Register, Thur., 28 July 1898.

At his home near Mederville July 21st, 1898, occurred the death of Norman I. Scovel, aged 55 years, 3 months and 20 days. The deceased was born in Makin County, Mo., March 31, 1843.

He emigrated with his parents to Iowa in 1849, locating in Clayton County, where he received a common school education and devoted his time on his father's farm until he grew to manhood. At the age of twenty-five he, with several others moved to the western part of this state, and took up land in Buena Vista County, where, after he had prepared a home, he was united in marriage with Flora Bartholemew in 1871, and in 1879 he sold his farm and moved his family to Kansas, pre-empting land in Rooks County, where they resided until 1888, when they returned to Clayton County, locating near Mederville.

Nine children were born to them, seven of whom are still living, three girls and four boys. In 1896 his devoted companion was taken from the home leaving the sorrowing father and children to care for a motherless infant, but in the short space of six weeks it was called to meet the mother, who had so recently gone before.

He was a kind and indulgent father, yet firm in his convictions of right and wrong. His aim in life was to do good and he was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. He loved his neighbors and his God and was living in His service, a devoted Christian man. He was respected by all who knew him, and his acquaintances were many. He will be sadly missed not only by his family but by all with whom he had to do. He had been in poor health for some time past but not until recently would he give up to medical treatment, and on Sunday before his death, he walked out into his fields and Monday he had a stroke of paralysis from which he never regained consciousness.

Besides his family he leaves five brothers, one sister, and an aged mother to mourn the loss of a son, brother and father. The funeral took place Sunday and was largely attended, and all that was mortal was laid to rest in the Mederville cemetery, Rev. Bixby, of Edgewood, officiating. We extend to the sorrowing children our heartfelt sympathy. - S.R.M.
