Elkader Register, Fri., 25 Feb. 1898.

Died at his home in Elkader, Feb. 20th, 1898, of arteria sclerosis, M. E. Munger, Sr., at the advanced age of 78 years, 9 months and 7 days.

Deceased was born in Warsaw, Wyoming County, N.Y., on May 13th, 1819, where Aug. 20th, 1838, he was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with Jane M. Glazier. To them were born nine children, six sons and three daughters, eight of whom are still living, viz: Geo. W., Eben R., S. R., Aurelia Cassidy, Mary Gifford and Milo E. Jr., of Elkader, W. F., of Volga Cty, and Mrs. Carrie White, of Arlington, Iowa, all of whom were present at his bedside for several days previous to and at the time of his departure into eternity, and with his faithful companion did all that loving care could do to alleviate his suffering and make his last days on earth pleasant. Two brothers, Daniel, in Pennsylvania, and Jarius, of Thorpe, Iowa, and two nephews George and Edward Russell, of Elkader, with several nephews and nieces, residents of this and other states also survive him.

The subject of this sketch moved with his family to Crawford County, Pa., in 1841, where he engaged in farming until May 1866, at which time he came West and settled in Read township, Clayton County, where he resided until 1886, when he became a resident of Elkader. He was a member of the M.E. church, made no loud professions but his life was upright and his daily walk an example worthy of emulation. He loved his quiet home, kindred, friends and neighbors, his country and his God. Was firm in his convictions of right and wrong yet gentle and kind to all.

He had been looking forward to Aug. 20th, 1898, as the 60th anniversary of his marriage, hoping to be present at a reunion of his family, children and grandchildren, but was not permitted to enjoy a realization of this hope. He died as he had lived, in the fear of God and with the respect of all who knew him, and he will be missed, not only by loving kindred but by neighbors and friends.

So let his ashes rest in peace while his soul returns to the God who gave it. May the grace of God sustain the aged companion and children in their day of sorrow is our devout wish.

The funeral services occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Congregational church Rev. A. B. Fickle, of the M.E. church officiating, assisted by Rev. Fisk, of the Congregational church, and Evangelist Murphy, of Chicago, and was largely attended by friends and neighbors of the departed. The five sons of the deceased served as pall bearers, thus bestowing the last sad tribute of love and respect.

The ladies of the Eastern Star attended the funeral as an expression of their sympathy with their bereaved sister.
