Elkader Register, Fri., 25 Sept. 1896.
Samuel Denton Corlett.
At the home of his parents in Farmersburg twp., on Sunday Sept. 20th, after an illness of one week, Samuel D. Corlett passed from this life. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Corlett, and was born Aug. 31st, 1872, on the farm where he died at the age of 24 years and 20 days.
Sam, as he was familiarly known to his friends was a hard working, energetic young man and at the recent fair at National was especially busy. Although ailing for the past year he nor his friends suspected anything serious. The first of last week he was taken seriously ill and in spite of medical skill sank away as stated, from what appears to have been appendicitis. Two brothers, young men, have preceded him in death. A general favorite with old and young his demise has cast a gloom of sorrow upon the community where he commanded respect and confidence by his sterling character. To the family, his parents and the six brothers and three sisters, this sudden taking away of a beloved son and brother - one who cared so little for self and planned and worked so much for them - words fail to express their grief.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon from the family residence, Rev. F. I. Stevens, of Elkader, officiating. The large attendance of neighbors and friends from different parts of the county, testify the sympathy felt for the sorrowing family. The interment was in the Giard cemetery.
