Elkader Register, Fri., 05 June 1896. Littleport column.
Our people were astonished and surprised to hear that John Sullivan had died on Friday morning, the 29th of May, being sick only a few hours. John was an old settler here having lived on their farm here for the last 36 years, and of late he has been engaged quite extensively in the stock business. He was continually on the go and had a large circle of acquaintances, was always full of business and ready to buy any kind of stock, and was honest and straightforward in his dealings. He will be missed in this community and there were many regrets that he had to go so soon. He leaves an aged mother, a brother and sister to mourn his departure. The sympathy of the entire community is with the afflicted ones.
