Elkader Register, Fri., 24 Jan. 1896. Clayton column.

A telegram received here Tuesday morning by the family of W. C. Stearns conveyed the sad announcement of the death of Ed. Stearns, after an illness of two weeks at Minneapolis. He was about 45 years old and leaves a wife and one daughter. The funeral will take place here on Friday. Ed. was well known and has many friends among our people who will learn with regret of his demise.

Note: Gravestone in Clayton cemetery, although very hard to read, shows his given name to be either Edwin or Edward
