Elkader Register, Fri. 06 Dec. 1895.
At Whittemore, Iowa, Friday morning, Nov. 29th, the subject of this sketch, after five months illness, passed to the great beyond. He was born in Fairfield County, Ohio, Oct. 17, 1812. In 1835, in the county of his birth, he was united in marriage to Elzira Furr. They came to Linn County, Iowa, in 1841, and from there to Clayton County in 1843, settling in this township. Nine children were born to them, of which five are living, Mrs. John Goodenough, Mrs. Chas. Thompson and Chas Wesley Cole, of Whittemore; Mrs. E. W. Mahoney, Marshall, Minn., and Mrs. L. A. Mahoney, of California. These, with the aged wife and mother, are left to mourn and wait for the reunion where pain and suffering are not known.
Mr. Cole, coming to this place before it was laid out as a town, worked upon some of the first buildings in the place. During all the years of his residence here no one could say ought but in his favor. Uncle Charley Cole was known and respected by all. His remains were brought here for burial on Saturday last, and the services conducted by Rev. F. L. Stevens, of the M.E. church, were largely attended by the old friends and neighbors of the deceased. Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Goodenough and Wesley Cole were the only ones of his family able to come to the old home on this sad errand.
