Elkader Register, Fri., 27 Sept. 1895.
At North McGregor on Monday morning last the subject of this sketch passed into the great beyond, in the 71st year of his life. "Uncle Billy" as he was familiarly called was born in Washington County, N.Y., April 20th, 1820. In 1837 he came to Quincy, Ill., and in 1844 he married Mary Featherly. After his marriage he engaged in mining in Wisconsin, and kept a hotel and store at Muscoda, in that state. Coming to North McGregor in 1857 he engaged as a clerk and shortly afterwards went into business for himself. He has since been engaged as a railroad contractor and a hotel keeper. For years he has been a township trustee and assessor. Friendly and social he was known and liked by a large circle of friends, who will miss him in their gatherings. The funeral took place on Tuesday last under the auspices of Bezer lodge, A.F. & A.M., of McGregor, of which Mr. Moncrief was a member.
