At West McGregor, on Thursday, Sept 19th, 1895, occurred the death of Bertha, widow of the late M. J. Brown. She was born at Christiania, Norway, on Dec. 7th, 1830; in 1848 she with her father came to America and settled near Prairie du Chien, Wis. In 1854 she married M. J. Brown and has resided in McGregor since that time, Mr. Brown having died in 188_. Seven children were born to them, of these, two sons, M. J. and Cyrus, died after reaching the age of 21 years. The five remaining children are Mrs. John L. Ra_lton, of St. Louis, Mo., George Brown, Lincoln, Nebr., Mrs. Rev. H. A. Groen, Lawler, Iowa, and H. D. and Miss Alma Brown, of Elkader.
Deceased was most highly esteemed by those who have known her for many years, and will be mourned and sadly missed by her beloved children whom she has lived to see become respected men and women of the different communities in which they live.
The funeral was held from Mrs. Brown's late residence on Saturday afternoon last, the religious services being conducted by Rev. C. A. Marshall, pastor of the Congregational church at McGregor, being largely attended by her friends and neighbors of McGregor, who came to pay their last respects to one who had resided in their midst so many years. Among those in attendance were Rev. F. Fisk, J. E. Branch, and Mr. and Mrs. John Bahr, of Elkader.
