Elkader Register, Fri., 14 June 1895
As the result of a dispute Geo. Lusche shot and instantly killed Mathias Mardzel Sunday evening on the farm of August Heiden Jr., near Osborne. It appears that the two named, with Stephen Kriesche, were occupying a shanty and were working together grubbing. Sunday Mardzel and Lusche were alone most of the time and were drinking and quarreling, having a keg of beer in the shanty. In the evening Kriesche says he came back and laid down and went to sleep, but was aroused by the report of the revolver. He saw that Mardzel was dead and Lusche excited and exclaiming that he did not mean to kill the man. An alarm was given but before those in the vicinity made any effort the murderer escaped into the underbrush which surrounds the place. Sheriff Cook was notified Monday morning and is now endeavoring to find the man. It is said that he was seen Monday near Edgewood. The murderer is a man about six feet in height, 48 years old and dark complexion, one side of his face is drawn as if it had been paralyzed. He walks rather stooped over.
The remains of the victim were brought to Elkader Tuesday and buried in the Catholic cemetery. He was about 51 years of age and leaves a wife in the old country.
