Elkader Register, Thur., 14 Dec. 1893. Elkport column.
Mrs. Mary Phalen Carter, aged 75 years, died at the residence of her son Thomas Phalen, Thursday, Dec. 7th, of old age. Mrs. Carter came to Clayton County fifty years ago, when the county was a wilderness and still inhabited by indians. For the past eight years she has made her home with her son Thomas where she has had all the comforts of life that a dutiful son and his wife could provide for her. Mary Delaney was born in Ireland in 1817, and coming to America married John Phalen in New York state. They came to Iowa some time in 1845, settling first in Read twp., and then moved to Volga twp. At that time their nearest neighbor, Uncle Billy Bente lived five miles from them. In 1852 her husband died leaving her with one son and three daughters, Thos. Phalen, Mrs. Margant ________, of Postville; Mary Ann Cahalan, ___Rockwell, Ia.; and Mrs. Ellen Curran, of Dubuque. Mrs. Phalen in April 1864 married Patrick Carter who died in April 1879. The funeral took place at St. Joseph's church at Elkader, on Saturday last, Rev. Father Reilly officiating. A large concourse of friends attended the last sad rites. May she rest in peace.
