Elkader Register, Thur., 10 Aug. 1893. Volga column.
On Friday, Aug. 4th, 1893, occurred the death of Mr. Frederick G. Thuurber, at his home near Medervlle. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. S. Roberts, of the M.E. church of this place, of which church he had been a member 37 years. He was born in Vermont, June 8, 1815, being at the time of his death 78 years of age. Early in the 50's he came to this county and was a strong factor in the building up of this part of Iowa. In 1856, when the Elkader mission was established, with Rev. H. Taylor as pastor, Mr. Thurber was one of those who helped organize. The mission consisted of the Elkader, Pony Hollow, Patterson, Volga City and Cox Creek classes. Mrs. Thurber died April 6th, 1889, and since then Mr. Thurber has resided with his son Justin, near Mederville. Three children are left to mourn his death, Justin Thurber, Mrs. Parker, in Arkansas, and another daughter who resides in Oregon, besides many friends, who will ever remember him as a kind friend and faithful Christian.
