Elkader Register, Thur., 27 July 1893. Elkport column.
A horrible accident happened in Zimmerman & Ives' saw mill at Guttenberg, Saturday afternoon, in which Julius Witte lost his life. It seems that a belt slipped off a pulley in the mill, and while young Witte was trying to put it on, his clothing caught in the fast revolving shaft and he was whirled into eternity quicker than we can write it. His left arm was torn from its socket and he was bruised about his head and body. When picked up by his fellow workmen he was dead. Dr. Duffin was called and upon examination at once telegraphed for Coroner Kriebs, who held an inquest Saturday night. The coroner's jury rendered a verdict of accidental death and exonerated the mill company and others from all blame. The funeral took place Monday.
