Elkader Register, Thur., 26 Jan. 1893.
Mr. H. G. Smart died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Worley, at New Albin, Ia., on Jan. 19, at the advanced age of 87 years, 5 months and 8 days.
Mr. Smart was born at Shipton, Canada, July 9, 1805. In 1835 he married Emelle Guild at Bells Falls, Vt. He came west in 1856 and settled in Garnavillo, where Mrs. Smart died in 1870. Five children survive him, viz, G. H. Smart, of Guttenberg, Charles H., of Nashville, Tenn., S. H., of Port Edwards, Wis., Mrs. Hattie A. Worley and Mrs. Emilie J. Luther, of New Albin. Mr. Smart enjoyed the high distinction of being the oldest Mason in Iowa, having been a Mason in good standing for over 65 years. We clip the following from the records of Garnavillo Lodge No. 90, A.F. & A.M.
H. G. Smart, initiated an E.A. in Corinthian Lodge No. 28, A.F. & A.M., at Newport, N.H., Jan. 9, 1827, passed to F.C. Nov. 27, 1827, raised to sublime degree March 4, 1828, was admitted to membership in Garnavillo Lodge No. 90, A.F. & A.M., July 24, 1866. He served his lodge as Master for several years and has occupied other stations of trust and honor. As a Mason he was just and upright, genial and kindly in his intercourse with is brethren. As a citizen he was energetic, far-seeing, and public-spirited. Always present where a kind act and generous deed would bring comfort to a suffering heart. He was universally esteemed and loved, nothing base or lowly entered his mind, his Christianity was of that broad, enobling type which encompassed the world. In his youth he had learned the trade of bricklayer, and many edifices here remain as monuments of his skill, among the rest the Congregational Church within whose walls he so often raised his voice in anthems of praise and thanksgiving. His remains were brought here by an escort from Lansing lodge and buried in the old Garnavillo cemetery by the side of his wife. The ceremonies were conducted by Garnavillo Lodge No. 90, assisted by delegations from neighboring towns. Mr. J. O. Crosby pronounced a short but appropriate eulogy in which he paid the highest tribute to the departed in saying that he was the noblest work of God, an "honest man."
