News has just reached us that Tommy Wilson, formerly of this township, had died of typhoid fever at Jacksonville. The remains will be brought to Garnavillo for interment.
~Elkader Register, Thursday, September 8, 1898 (Clayton column); pg 4

--- ---

Clayton - The guard that came with the body of T. Wilson says that no one over the age of 22 years dies with typhoid fever, yet there are enough between the ages of 18 and 22 dying with the disease at the hospital to keep four undertaking officers busy. Keep the boys at home until they are weaned.

Aty. G.H. Schulte yesterday received a telegram from Camp Cuba Libre, Jacksonville, Fla., that Tommy Wilson, who was born and raised in Clayton township but had been attending school at Ames, where he enlisted in the 49th Iowa regiment was dangerously sick of typhoid fever, and not long after another dispatch announcing the sad news of his death.

We are informed that his remains will be brought to Garnavillo for interment - Clayton County Democrat, September 1898

----------

Note: He was s/o Mary Wilson Kingsley, who is buried as Mary A. Wilson in the Old Garnavillo cemetery. Thomas is buried in the Garnavillo Community cemetery as Thomas K. Wilson. He was a member of Co. I, 49th Iowa (Spanish-American War)
