Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Dec. 1894.

A sad accident occurred last week Wednesday between Giard and McGregor. Louis Backer and wife were on their way to McGregor, and when about a mile from home coming into the main road at Washburn's corners, the team became frightened and ran away, and both were thrown from the wagon. Louis was severely injured, from the effects of which he died that evening about 7 o'clock. Mrs. Backer was only slightly injured.

(Note: There are no Backer burials noted in Clayton County. This article is thought to refer to Louis Becker, 1823 - 05 Dec. 1894, buried in Pleasant Grove cemetery, per WPA records.)
