Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Oct. 1894. Volga column.
Again death has entered our midst and taken two of our best citizens, early settlers, who, by their integrity and industry, have done much toward making our community what it is. John Keeling died at his home west of town last Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 10, after an illness of only three days. He had been in poor health this fall but it was not thought serious, for he was able to be about and ride to town as usual, but on Monday afternoon was taken very sick, being almost entirely paralyzed. He lingered until toward evening Wednesday when he passed peacefully away. He was converted in early life and joined the M.E. church. He favored all good works and helped in every way he could, was especially interested in the temperance cause and for a number of years was prominent in the work of the county temperance alliance. He was a deep reader and thinker, read the best periodicals of the day and so was well informed on all important topics. At the time of his death he was 68 years of age. The funeral discourse was preached by Rev. Jean Crousaz in the M.E. church, Friday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of people. He leaves a wife and five children, George and Arthur Keeling and Mrs. Wilbur Whitford, of Ruthven, Clay County, and Mrs. Thomas Smith and Frank Keeling, of Sperry twp., also nine grandchildren, besides a large circle of friends to mourn his death.
