Elkader Register, Thur., 06 Oct. 1894. Elkport column.
Mrs. Mercy Penhollow, nee Bates, died at her home in Mallory twp., on Friday, Sept. 28, at the advanced age of 73 years. She was born in New York in 1821, was married to Richard Penhollow in 1840, and in 1849 moved to Iowa, and took up a claim in Mallory twp., where she has lived ever since. Her husband died two years ago. Mrs. Penhollow was the mother of 13 children, of whom ten are living. Grandma, as she was usually called, was a straight, upright, Christian woman, had a good word for everybody, and we don't think had an enemy on earth. She united with the U.B. church 50 years ago and has lived up to her faith the whole time. By her death the community loses a good woman, and the church a consistent member. May she rest in peace.
