Elkader Register, Thur., 20 Aug. 1891. Elkport column.
DIED- Saturday, August 15th, 1891, Marie Caroline Blanchaine, of Volga township, aged 64 years and six months. Mrs. Blanchaine was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, February 18th, 1827. At an early age her parents emigrated to this country. In the year 1863 she was marred to Charles Blanchaine and immediately settled on their present fine farm in Volga township. There were born unto them nine children, five of whom are dead, and those living are Charles at Ossian, Henry at LaPorte City, Mrs. George Reugnitz and Anna at home. There is very general sorrow over the death of this most estimable woman. Having been a resident of Volga township for the past thirty-eight years she was known and beloved by everyone. Nobody ever went to the Blanchaine home but returned happy and with expressions of "Oh, what a nice woman!" and "Oh, what a pleasant lady she is!" and hundreds of other expressions that but feebly expressed the feelings of those that visited there. Hospitality was a fixed fact there and you had no sooner entered the house than you felt you were at home. The deceased has been sick for a long time and all that wealth, friends and medical aid could do was of no avail. To the aged husband who has lost his helpmate and his dearest of all on earth, and to the bereaved children who have lost a kind and noble mother, our people one and all extend their heartfelt sympathies. The funeral took place Monday and was very largely attended. Rev. Fuchs preached a most eloquent and touching sermon and the Elkader singing society sang two beautiful songs at the grave. May she rest in peace.
