Elkader Register, Thur., 30 July 1891. Volga column.
Mrs. Phoebe. Hills, one of Clayton county's early settlers, died at her home in Volga last Tuesday night, July 21, 1891, of heart disease, at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 19 days. She was in her usual health when she retired, but death came during the night.
Mrs. Hills was born in Montgomery county, New York, September 2, 1805. She was first married to Schuyler Harvey in 182_, and was mother of eight children, four of whom are living.
They came west to Iowa in 1850 and settled in Volga, where Mr. Harvey died February 9, 1856. She was married to Enos C. Hills March 12th, 1858.
For many years they managed the City House, but for a few years past have lived in their little home in peaceful quiet.
She was for 48 years a member of the M.E. church, and attended services on the Sabbath before her death. She will be greatly missed by her friends and neighbors.
Four children, Wm. Harvey, who lives in western Iowa, and who was unable to be present at the funeral, Mrs. Moreland, of Strawberry Point, Mrs. Dodge, of Colesburg, and Mrs. Still, of Cedar Rapids, 26 grandchildren and over 40 great-grandchildren, besides the husband and many friends, are left to mourn her death. Rev. H. Williams preached the funeral sermon Thursday afternoon, basing his remarks on the following text. "Watch ye, therefore, for know not when the master of this house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing; or in the morning, lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, watch."
