Elkader Register, Thur., 19 Mar. 1891. Guttenberg column.
Sad, very sad was the news sent over the wires from Chicago on Monday evening, 9th inst., to the relatives of Rudolf Schrodt. The message stated that Rudolf was shot. Thereupon his brother-in-law, Julius Overbeck, immediately started off to learn further particulars. Upon his arrival he found the lifeless body in Alexian hospital, where he died at one o'clock a.m. Tuesday, six hours after the fatal bullet had penetrated his brain. Rudolf Schrodt, aged 23 years, opened a meat market about the 1st of January in Chicago and controlled a good trade. On Monday morning he left his business in charge of his employe and returned about supper time, evidently with suicidal tendencies, for he committed the deed in the back part of the market, while his employe was gone to Supper. He was taken to Alexian hospital where he died as stated. His remains were brought to this place, where his mother and two sisters reside. The true motives which weakened his spirit and banished self-control, may never be known, for the temptations of a city are great and manifold from wheat gambling palaces to faro dens. He possessed a pleasant quiet nature and was neat and attentive in business and liked by all who knew him. He became a member of Guttenberg Lodge, I.O.O.F. last fall while visiting his relatives. He was buried on the 13th inst. Dr. de Fries delivered an appropriate address at the grave, choosing the theme: "Overestimate not your ambition and strength, for you may fall."
