Elkader Register, Thur., 26 July 1923.
John Stence, one of the early pioneers of this community passed away at his home in this city, at the age of 78 years. Mr. Stence had been failing in health for some time.
His wife preceded him in death about fifteen years ago. He is survived by the following children: Mike Stence, of Elkport; Mart and Ray Stence, in this neighborhood; Kate, at home; Mrs. Wm. Henry and Mrs. James O'Brien of near Strawberry Point; Julia, at Danbury, Iowa and Mrs. John Wiley of Lttleport.
Funeral services were held this forenoon at 10:00 o'clock from St. Joseph's church conducted by Rev. J. P. Taken. Interment was made in St. Joseph's cemetery. The funeral was largely attended which showed the high esteem he was held by his fellow citizens.
