Elkader Register, Thur., 12 July 1923.
Josephine Nelson Erickson died at the O. K. Olson home in Clermont June 25th, 1923. She had been ailing for some time but was able to be up and around until when the sickness became so serious that upon the advice of her physician she was taken to Clermont so as to be as near medical aid as possible; here everything was done for her but to no avail and just as the sun was sinking to rest on the above named day she passed peacefully away.
Josephine Nelson Erickson daughter of Nels and Julia Nelson was born April 26th, 1870, she was baptized in the East Clermont Church and at about the age of fourteen she was confirmed in the Marion church by the same pastor who baptized her, namely Rev. O. Waldeland. On September 18, 1890 she was united in marriage with Henry Erickson; they then moved to Lyon County near Inwood, Iowa, where they lived for four years, after which they moved back to Clayton County and settled on a farm near Gunder which was the family home until the time of her death.
Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Erickson, Mrs. J. Jorgenson and Mrs. Louis Amundson, of Clermont, Mrs. Henry Larson, Postville, Mrs. Palmer Larson, Eagle Grove, Mrs. Henry Vellerson, Gunder, Mrs. Richard Erickson, Peter and Harriet at home.
Mrs. Erickson was a kind, Christian woman, always ready to lend a helping hand to the sick and needy. No task was too hard and no distance too far when she could help anyone in need. She was a mother in all that the word implies; she sacrificed everything always and was happy to sacrifice. As a good neighbor she could not be out-rivaled.
She was a life-long member of the Marion Lutheran Church, always taking an active part in church and mission work.
She was secretary of the Gunder Red Cross from the time it was organized until her death and at the time when work was most needed in that she gave of her efforts and time unsparingly. In addition to her immediate family her husband and children she leaves to mourn her passing her mother, Mrs. N. Nelson, Gunder, her sisters Mrs. N. Stinerson, Clermont, Alma Nilson, Gunder and one brother Martin Nelson, Gunder.
The funeral was held from the family home and Marion Church Wednesday afternoon, June 27th, 1923. Rev. Arveson of St. Olaf and Rev. Gunsten of Clermont officiating. Interment took place in the Marion Cemetery.
