John Steckelman was born in the province of Hanover, Germany, March 25, 1851. at the age of 17, accompanied by his sister he came to America locating at Elkader, Iowa. March 12, 1876, he was united in marriage with Mary Haferland, and resided on a farm 2 1/2 miles west of Elkader for thirty years. The old home farm was then sold and they lived in Volga, Ia., for two years. He then purchased a farm near Lamont, Iowa, where he remained for four years. His health did not permit him to continue farming, so the place was sold and the family moved to Oelwein, Iowa, for six years. The last five years of his life was spent in Volga, Iowa, where his death occurred July 1, 1923, at the age of 72 years, 3 months and 6 days. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and five daughters, Mrs. L. E. Bennington of Fayette, Ia., Mrs. Elizabeth Libby of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Mrs. E. O. Probert of Volga, Iowa, Mrs. H. P. Sentman of Fairmont, Minn., and Amelia of Des Moines, Ia., also two brothers, August and Fred, of Nebraska, of which August was able to be present at the last services. Rev. Franke of Elkader conducted the funeral services at the Presbyterian church and the service at the cemetery was conducted by the Masonic order of Elkader of which order he had been a member since the age of 21 years. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga, Iowa, on July 5, 1923.
