Elkader Register, Thur., 22 Feb. 1923.
It was indeed a shock to the many friends and relatives when the sad news of the passing away of August H. Buckman, Jr., became known. Although ill since June, his recovery was expected until Friday evening when the crisis came. He lingered until Tuesday morning at 12:20 when he was released from all suffering and sorrow.
August Henry Buckman was born in Read township on August 27, 1899, the youngest son of Mr. August Christopher Buckman and his wife, Minnie, nee Tewes. After attending the rural school, he took one year of high school work at Elkader, and then assisted his brother on the home farm in Read township up to the time of his last illness.
His early departure at the age of 23 years, 5 months and 6 days, is mourned by a grief stricken mother; three sisters: Mrs. Ellen Taake, Mrs. Lucy Taake and Mrs. Sarah Tieden; two brothers, Lorenzo and Arthur, and a large circle of other relatives and friends. His father preceded him in death several years ago.
Funeral services were held at the church at Clayton Centre on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15th, conducted by Rev. Wuestenberg. The body was then brought to Garnavillo where services were conducted by Rev. Braun at the cemetery. - Garnavillo Tribune.
