Elkader Register, Thur., 11 Jan. 1923. Strawberry Point column.
Death took from our midst a young life in the passing of Mrs. Jesse Jessen, at her home Sunday morning, Jan. 7th, 1923, at about 7:00 o'clock. The end came as a gracious relief, after many months of illness. She had not been in good health for practically three years or more, but during this time she had not been bedfast only at times. During her long illness she received every care and attention that loving hearts could devise and loving hands administer. The pain that this mother endured these years of ill health seemed at times to be more than she could endure, but thru it all she maintained her unfaltering trust in God and thought of her husband and children she would soon leave. Thruout her extended illness she showed that pleasant kindly patient nature which characterized her when she died she raised up in bed looking toward heaven with her arms extended and said "Grandpa" with a smile and laid back on her pillow and peacefully passed away.
Dorothy Donna Alderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Alderson of this city, was born in Cass township March 19, 1887. She passed away at her home in Strawberry Point last Sunday morning after a lingering illness extending over a period of three years or more at the age of 35 years, 10 months and 19 days. On October 21, 1909, she was united in marriage to Jesse Jessen. To this union were born four children, two daughters and two sons, Donna Ruth, Edna Jessie, John William and Robert Dale. After her marriage she lived for a brief time at Denver, Colo., moving from there to a farm in Delaware Co., where she lived two years, since which time she has resided at her home in Strawberry Point. In her girlhood days she united with the Christian church at Pleasant Grove of which she was always a member. She was of a cheerful disposition never complaining of the illness which called her home. She leaves to mourn her loss besides her sorrowing family, her parents also three brothers and two sisters, Thomas, L. and Robert T. of this place, Walter of Los Angeles, Cal., Mrs. Nannia Schultz of Lemington, Wis., and Mrs. Emma Carroll of Kansas city, Missouri, all of whom were present with the exception of Mrs. Schultz and Walter. Besides these she leaves a host of relatives and friends. She was a member of the W.R.C. and the Yeoman Lodge and it was her aim to live up to the teachings. In her death her spirit passes on to the reward that comes to one who lived a true, Christian life. The funeral services were held this afternoon (Tuesday) in the Congregational church conducted by Rev. Maxwell and a large number of relatives and friends gathered together in honor of the departed one. Thru the respect the business houses remained closed during the service. Many beautiful flowers covered the lovely casket of our departed friend.
