Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 07 Nov. 1918.
Hilma, the nine year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Polkow, of Read township, was fatally burned late Saturday afternoon.
Her parents were working in the cornfield and an older sister had just left the house on an errand when the accident occurred. Hilma was putting wood into the stove to start the evening meal when her clothes caught fire in some way. Her sister hearing her screams rushed back and dashing a pail of water over the child put out the flames but not before they had burned so badly that she died the Sunday morning following at 5:30.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock Rev. Othenstadt, of Clayton Center, officiating and burial took place in the cemetery at Clayton Center. The sympathy of all goes to the family in their sorrow.
