Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 31 Oct. 1918. Strawberry Point column.

Mrs. Emily Truman King passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Carpenter, Saturday afternoon. Emily Truman was born March 25, 1821, in the state of New York. She was married to Wm. Bartholomew March 2, 1842, who died in 1864. In March 1865 she was united in marriage to Harvey King who died about four years ago. Mrs. King has been a resident of Clayton county for the past sixty-two years, the past four years making her home in Strawberry Point with her daughter, Mrs. Mabel Carpenter. Although she has seen the passing of ninety-seven summers, Mrs. King has been able to be about the home and to wait upon herself until the last few weeks. Truly in Mrs. King's life she has seen "History repeat itself." As a girl of an uncle in the Revolutionary war; in the Mexican war, her brother Silas, an uncle and two cousins went forth to fight and later in the Civil war with a prayer on her lips and an ache in her heart she watched a son and her first husband go forth and fight for all the red, white and blue stands for. When the United States entered the present war, her heart grieved. One grandson, Harvey Carpenter and one great-grandson Lyle Dorland enlisted to fight for the lives and liberty of humanity. Altho her hands were not as nimble as they used to be, her affection and eagerness were still as great and she responded from the first call to the Red Cross and in the morning of her ninety-seventh birthday she sent a $5.00 bill to the Red Cross. She leaves three children, Mrs. Mabel Carpenter, of this place, Mrs. Sarah Dorland, of Charles City, and B. T. Bartholomew, of Osceola, Missouri, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Carpenter home Tuesday forenoon, conducted by Rev. Wells. Interment took place in the Cox Creek cemetery
