Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 24 Oct. 1918.
Private Walter Roy Tinkey was born Dec. 22, 1896 in Mallory township near Osterdock, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. He was educated in the common county school. On January 16, 1918, he was united in marriage to Miss Flossie Friedlein, of Osterdock, and their home was established on the Ed Tinkey farm. On September 5, 1918, he was called to the colors, in service for Uncle Sam, and was serving his country nobly and justly when the Angel of Death called him to the Great Beyond on Oct. 16, 1918, from the Base Hospital at Camp Dodge. His time of serving was short, being only six weeks. But he was loyal to the old flag, and gave his life for it. Besides his wife and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Tinkey, he leaves to mourn his death, two brothers, Will, who is also in the service and stationed at Camp Zachary Taylor, Louisville, Ky.; Raymond at home; and two sisters, Mrs. Joe White of Mallory township, and Mrs. Chas. Troester of Millville township; and a host of relatives and friends. The funeral services for Private Tinkey were held from the Chas. Friedlein home at Osterdock, late Saturday afternoon, Oct. 19, Rev. Fred Riggs, of the Fairview Brethern church in charge. The hour was late because they awaited the arrival of the brother Will from Camp Taylor. Interment was at Bethel cemetery, in charge of Mr. Beerman from Guttenberg.
