John Wirkler was born on Dec. 12, 1841, at Markhof county, Loerch, Switzerland, and died on sept. 01, 1918, in Garnavillo, aged 77 years, 8 months and 19 days.
At the age of eight, in company with his parents, he came to America. They settled on a farm in Cedar Creek, where he spent his younger days.
On March 28, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Splies. They began farming on a farm near National, residing there for 19 years.
In Sept. 1892 they went to California where they remained for a year, then coming back to Garnavillo. Some years later they returned to the West for two years more, but since then they have resided in Garnavillo.
Mr. Wirkler has been a patient sufferer for several months. He leaves to mourn his death his devoted wife, one brother, Christian, of Long Beach, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Matty Kohler, of Monona; Miss Rose Wirkler, of Garnavillo; Mrs. Pauline Kaiser, of Monona, and Mrs. Laura Maurer, of New Haven, Conn. Two brothers, Joseph and Edward, preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Braun officiating. Interment in the new cemetery.
