Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 25 July 1918 Volga column.
Volga was terribly shocked Saturday evening when word was received that John Burns, Sr., had been killed near Mederville. The section men had been called to Mederville as the bridge was on fire and they left immediately. The weed burner had gone down a short time before and did not know the section men were coming. In rounding a sharp curve the men saw the weed burner backing up onto them and all jumped but Mr. Burns. The caboose jammed upon the motor car, catching Mr. Burns underneath, crushing one leg and foot and a bolt struck him in the forehead. He died almost instantly. Dan Burns was quite badly bruised on the left side. The family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
