Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 06 June 1918.

August Frederick, oldest son of Carl Asmus and his wife Marie (nee Schrampfer) was born September 13th, 1901, near Strawberry Point, Clayton county, Iowa.

For a number of years the family lived in Volga City, when on March the first of this year they moved on a farm in Read township, which they had purchased mainly for the purpose of giving the young man a splendid opportunity to assist his father, who is not very strong, with the work. Plans were made to build and to make other necessary improvements on the place. The boy was very much interested in the work and filled with hope, all looked forth to a prosperous future.

All of a sudden a shadow of gloom was cast over the family circle. About a week ago August began to complain about not feeling well, a doctor was called, who, as the disease developed, pronounced it to be inflammation of the bowels. Everything possible was done to relieve the suffering and prolong the life of the patient, but before the parent's realized the serious condition of their beloved son, he closed his eyes in the last sleep on Friday, May 31, at 4:30 in the afternoon at the age of 16 years, 8 months and 18 days.

It was a shock to the community and the most heartfelt sympathy goes out to the grief stricken parents in their sad bereavement, and to the two younger brothers, Henry and Walter.

August was a faithful son, a loving brother and a bright scholar. He was a member of a class of fourteen, which was confirmed at the Evangelical church on Palm Sunday of this year. All members of the class were present at the funeral services at the Ev. church on Sunday forenoon, June 2nd. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery.
