Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 2 May 1918.

Carl Haman was born at Dambeck, Germany, Aug. 17, 1836, and died at Osborne, Iowa, April 26, 1918, being 81 years, 8 months and 9 days old at the time of his death.

Mr. Haman was talking to a friend on a bridge near Osborne on the afternoon of his death, and while leaning against the railing, it gave away and he was precipitated to the ground below. His injuries resulted in his death about two hours later.

Mr. Haman was married to Maria Magdalene Borchert in the year 1858, while still in Germany, and they came to this country in 1867, making direct to Clayton county, since which time this has been his home. The wife died Jan. 18, 1915, and the old gentleman has since made his home with his daughter, Mrs. John Sturm.

He is survived by one son (and) three daughters, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The children are: Mrs. William Heitcamp, Farmersburg; Mrs. Carl Sta_ler, Mason City; Mrs. John Sturm, Osborne, and Charles Haman, Luana. A brother also mourns the death of the subject of this sketch - Henry Haman, Luana.

The funeral was held from the Evangelical church in Elkader at 2 p.m. Monday, April 29, with Rev. C. H. Franke as minister. Burial was in the East Side cemetery.

Mr. Haman followed the business of farming all his life in this country, and has seen this county grow from an almost wilderness to its present position as a highly developed agricultural section. Land was cheap in those days, and the hardships and privations suffered by the men who farmed the lands of Clayton county in those days laid the foundation for its prosperity today. His work and its effects live.
