Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 02 May 1918. Elkport column.

Charles Dennis White, the seventh child of Silvanus and Lucy Ann White, was born on the 15th of Oct., 1882, at the home in the north part of Mallory township. He met an accidental death while south of Elkport on the 24th of April, 1918, being 35 years, 6 months and 9 days old. He was unmarried, his residence having always been with his parents on the farm until four years ago when they moved to Elkport and assumed charge of the hotel at that place. His mother died six years ago, and two brothers and sisters preceded him in death, leaving his father and seven sisters and eight brothers to mourn his departure. His brothers performed for him the last service that human hands can render a loved one, that of carrying his body to its last resting place. He was a man just approaching middle age; honest, hard working and industrious. It was while in the doing of his daily work that he met the last sad messenger. Some time, when all life lessons have been learned and stars forevermore have set. The things which our week of judgement here have spurned. The things over which we grieved with lashes wet. Will flash before us out of lifes dark night. As stars shine most in deepest tints of blue and we shall see how all God's plans were right and how what seemed reproof was love most true. Then be content poor hearts. God's plans like lilies pure and white unfold. We must not tear the close shut leaves apart. Time will reveal the calyxes of gold and if through patient toil we reach the land we're tired, with sandals loosed may rest. When we shall clearly know and understand. I think that we shall say "God knew best."
