Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 21 Mar. 1918.

On Saturday evening, March the 16th, the sad news reached Elkader that Mrs. Otto Kahler had passed away at Rochester, Minn., where she had been for treatment at the hospital for several weeks. She had been troubled with eczema for some time, and about two weeks ago her condition became alarming. The disease affected the heart, so the doctors claimed. The relatives were at once informed of the serious condition of the patient. Her brother and sister, C. F. and Carrie Schmidt, started at once for Rochester, which was on the 6th day of March. What tender love and medical skill was able to do, the patient received from husband, brother, sister and attendants, but as the days passed by the hopes for recovery faded. She closed her eyes in the last sleep on Saturday, March 16th, at 8 o'clock in the evening, at the age of 41 years, 5 months and 23 days. The remains were brought to this city on Monday, accompanied by the husband and brother.

Lenora M., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wolfgang Schmidt, was born at Elkader on Sept. 2_, 1876. Here she spent her childhood days, attended our public school and grew to womanhood.

On June 5th, 1907, she was married to Otto J. Kahler, and with him bid farewell to her old home, to move on a farm at Inkster, N.D., which has been her home ever since. Twice she has been here on a visit, once in 1910 when her little son Lester was baptized at grandmother Schmidt's home, and again in the fall of 1912, when her sister Mollie was sick.

Her departure is mourned by the grief-stricken husband, Otto J. Kahler, and little son Lester W., the aged mother, Mrs. Pauline Schmidt, and four brothers, namely: Fred H. Schmidt, Elkader, Iowa; C. G. Schmidt, Elkader, Iowa; William Schmidt, Seattle, Wash.; Wolfgang Schmidt, Fullerton, Neb.; four sisters, namely: Mrs. Kate Falkenhainer, Elkader; Mrs. Margaret Blanchaine, LaPorte City, Iowa; Mrs. Amelia Soll and Miss Carrie Schmidt, of Elkader, and many other relatives and a host of friends. One brother, Blasius, and one sister, Mrs. Mollie Becker, preceded her in death.

The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereaved family.

The funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 20th, at one o'clock in the afternoon, at the mother's home, and at 1:30 o'clock at the Evangelical church, conducted by Rev. Franke. Interment was in the East Side cemetery.
