James Leander Potter was born March 22, 1852, in Cook county, Illinois. At the age of two years he came with his parents to Volga, Iowa, where he grew to manhood. On April 27, 1873, he was united in marriage to Maria E. Phelps. To this union were born three children, Cora E. Lowe of Volga, Iowa; Earl Harrison of Abilene, Kansas; and Ray Edgar of Fayette, Iowa. Beside his wife and three children there are living, three brothers; Charles Martin of Waucoma, Iowa; Wilbur Willard of Fayette, Iowa; and Samuel Wesley of Orchard, Colorado, and four grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his death. About twenty-five years ago, he affiliated with the Disciples church and was transferred to the Methodist church in 1913. He was a true Christian, a kind and loving husband and father. His Christianity was evidenced in his every day life, even to the recognition of the Father's goodness, when he ate his last meal with his family. About three months ago he was stricken with paralysis. He was sixty-five years, 11 months and 12 days old.
