Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 17 Jan. 1918.
Mrs. Kate Ella (Smith) Powell was born Jan. 29, 1861, at Elkader, Iowa, and died in the same town Jan. 13, 1918, aged 56 years, eleven months and 15 days.
Mrs. Powell was a daughter of the late Fred and Harriet Smith, residents of Elkader for many years and who died and were buried in their home town.
She was married to John Charles Powell, May 29, 1879, at her home. To this union was born one son, namely, Sidney H. Powell. Besides the husband and son, two grandchildren - Harry Charles and Ross Franklin Powell - and three brothers and one sister survive her: Fred Smith, Strawberry Point; G. A. Smith, New York City; L.D. Smith, of Elkader; and Mrs. Hattie Davis, of Strawberry Point.
Mrs. Powell was sick only a short time, having been stricken with appendicitis on Monday last week. Her condition seemed to improve after an operation on Wednesday until Sunday noon, when her spirit passed beyond with hardly a warning.
The funeral was held at the Congregational church this Wednesday at 1 p.m., Rev. Isaac Cassell, her pastor, preaching the funeral sermon. Interment was in the East Side cemetery.
Mrs. Powell, having lived in Elkader all her life, was very well known and numbered her friends by the legion. She was a member of the Congregational church and the Royal Neighbor lodge. Her passing leaves a vacant place in the hearts of her friends as well as the relatives left behind.
