Elkader Register & Argus, Thur., 27 Dec. 1917. McGregor column.

Last Thursday night George Minnie, of this place, was found over on the Wisconsin channel of the Mississippi river, in an unconscious condition, with injuries about his head, and his legs and arms badly frozen by the bitter cold below zero temperature of that night. He was still breathing and the autoists who found him took him to the hospital, at Prairie du Chien, where all that could be done was done for him, but to no avail. He died at five o'clock Friday morning. The remains were brought to his home in McGregor, but later the Wisconsin authorities demanded a return of the body in order that an inquest might be held. At this inquest nothing definite was learned. The McGregor parties who found the body, Messrs. Powers and Roy Brown, told of finding the body on the ice but did not clear up the mystery of his death. The jury did not fix the responsibility of his death, owing to insufficient evidence. The cause of his death will probably never be known. Whether he was hit by some auto, whether he slipped and fell, causing injuries that resulted in his death, no man knows. But his tragic end, occurring at the holiday season, has cast a gloom over the community.
